The weather is getting cold, gardens are at rest, and many think that there is little to do for your landscape. With proper planning, planting and hardscape can create a beautiful winter landscape.
Winter is a great time to assess what’s missing in your landscape!
Trees & Plants: Alabama winters are mild enough to install hardier plants and trees. Mix evergreens and deciduous trees. Evergreens will provide a bit of green in the winter months and although deciduous trees lose their leaves, their branches and trunks can become focal points. Dogwood and Birch trees are beautiful in color and texture. Large trees around the home can also provide windbreaks and privacy screens.
Bark, Berries, & Blooms: If you are looking for a pop of color consider Crabapples, Hollies or Red Twig Dogwood for a splash of color. Add a few winter blooming bulbs or evergreen boughs in your garden containers and window boxes.
Hardscape: In the winter months, hardscape becomes the backbone of your garden. Rock walls, paths, art, fencing, boulders, and furniture can add structure to your garden all year.
Winter is the best time of year to add hardscape to your landscape!
Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting: Lighting not only provides energy savings and security but can be used to highlight architectural and hardscape features in your landscape. New color lighting technology with handheld capability can create color schemes for seasons, holiday, and theme parties.
