According to the Alabama Weather Blog we’re experiencing the second driest July on record.
“We have only measured 0.92 inches of rain at the Birmingham Airport. In fact, it looks like we will be lucky to get to one inch of rain for the month. If we total less than 1.11 inches of rain for the month, it will be the second driest July on record, drier than the horrible drought year of 1952. “ – James Spann
Landscaping Birmingham AL – Tips to Care for Your Landscape Investment
August is approaching and is the lowest rainfall of the year so preparation will be in order. You’ll want to protect valuable investments that you’ve made to your landscape.
Here are some tips:
- The Inch Per Week rule. If there is not an inch of rainfall per week, you’ll have to compensate with irrigation.
- Mulch conserves soil moisture by reducing evaporation. A blanket of mulch can provide shade to the soil and reduce temperature, which helps to provide moisture. Apply a fresh layer of mulch to areas where the soil is thin.
- Water deeply and less frequently. Soaking the soil every couple of days rather than light watering daily will help encourage roots to grow deeper and plants to be more drought resistant. (On turf areas we recommend “cycle soak” which is watering turf areas for 10 to 15 minutes then again 1 to 2 hrs later. This allows turf to take in the needed water without runoff.)
- Water in the morning. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity in the morning help more water soak into the soil rather than be lost from evaporation. Morning sun and rising temperatures also help promote foliage to dry quickly and reduce the risk of foliar diseases compared to evening watering. When plants are under drought stress watering as soon as possible minimizes further damage, regardless of the time of day.
